FILM MAKING 101
Learn the basics. Know the rules before you break them.
Writing - The script is also called the Bible. It is the most important piece of work. The daily work load depends on it. If you have no story, you have nothing. Also, bad narrative and dialogue makes bad movies. Writers visualize “the car.”
Producing - You found the script! Good work. Now, time to find the investors to make it happen. Locations, production equipment, cast and crew are just the tip of the iceberg. MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL? SAFETY!!! Producers pay for “the car” to get made.
Directing - Telling the story of the characters with the performance of the talent is not an easy task. Also, the entire creative aspect of the film entirely depends on the ability to utilize all the heads of departments. Your 1st Assistant Director and the AD Department is needed for scheduling talent and crew. Directors manage “the car” making process.
Cinematography - A camera is necessary to capture everything but it also needs to look right. All the technical aspects of a movie are managed by the Director of Photography (DP). The DP depends on the Camera Department Operators and Assistant Camera (AC) crew. The Gaffer along with the crew of Electricians. The Key Grip and Grips. They all work in tandem. They carefully engineer “the car.”
Production Design - You need something to shoot unless you plan on shooting empty space. The Production Designer (PD) along with the Art Director, Set Decorator, and Property Master all work together to create the world of the story that‘s being told. They creatively design the look and paint “the car.”
Editing - Editing is how the project comes full circle. Footage of all the work done in production is great but, without an editor to give the final beats to the movie, it’s going nowhere. The Editor and Assistant Editors, arrange all the footage. Editors put “the car” together and make sure it runs smooth.
Sound Design - Clean dialogue is as important as getting good camera footage. Sound Mixers and Boom Operators work during production to accomplish this feat but in post, Sound Engineers, Folly Artists and Soundtrack Composers set the tone for a movie. “The car” needs a proper sound system.

INCEPTION
Pro studio grade on-set workshops.
Film school is expensive. What matters most to industry pros is; Do you know the job? And, can you do the job? You don’t need a degree to make movies. Most industry pros don’t have a degree, at least not in film. In this Day-in-the-Life workshop we go over the ins and outs of a working day on set.
YOU TALKING TO ME?
Phrases and words shape the work we do. Not all conversations include you. Know when to listen, when to jump in and how to respond.
HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM
Plugging in to radio comms. Getting the proper fitted headset and keeping it clean. How to switch from channel to channel and get a hold of each department.
ALIEN VS. PREDATOR
Predatory productions. They’re out there and blend in to your environment. Could be a local or out of town production. They can take advantage of you, if you don’t know their foreign practices.
SAFETY FIRST
A set is a dangerous place. Best practices and safety protocols are crucial. Getting hurt can keep you out of work for a while, but that’s not the worst that can happen. Over the years, many of my co-workers have lost their lives. I’ve had some close calls.
OFFICE SPACE
Paperwork, lots of paperwork. Call sheets are just the tip of the iceberg. From the office to the set, there’s plenty of it going around.
SHOW ME THE MONEY!
Negotiating a day rate is a necessary skill. As freelancers, this can be tough if you don’t know you’re worth. Deal memos and filling out the proper paperwork gets you paid. That’s a big deal.
TOOLS OF THE TRADE
Each department has specific equipment they work with and each person needs specific tools for the job. This includes what you wear, from studio lots to locations.
